Artist's Description

This is a bronze sculpture of Isreal Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole singer, song writer and love of Hawaii. The plaque that is mounted below the bust reads: "In a gentle voice, he spoke through his music to Hawai'i and worlds beyond of love and respect for the values of his Ni'ihau heritage. Strong in his faith, loving husband and father, he envisioned a Sovereign land of promise for the keiki.

Israel's music reflected a deep attachment to the aina and to the people, especially of the Wai'anae Coast, his beloved and final home of rainbows.

Ua mau mai e ka pono mai ka makua lani mai"

The sculpture was done by Jan-Michelle Sawyer and donated to the people of Hawai'i by family and friends of Bruddah Iz.

He was born May20, 1960 and pased away June 28, 1997. Best known for his version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

This is displayed in front of the Wai'anae Community Center on Farrington Highway where everyone passing can see it daily.

About Craig Wood

Craig Wood

My first camera was a Kodak Brownie that I purchased with a $5.00 bill that I found at the age of 12 (69 years ago, so no digital then). My first black and white photos were of the Steinhardt Museum in San Francisco and later the Kon Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's sailing raft. Needless to say I was hooked. I joined the Air Force in 1960 and traveled throughout Asia. Even after retiring from the Air Force I was still in and out of Asia and Hawaii. My usual choice of 35 mm cameras was by Canon. I've done some 4 X 5 macro photography for a friend's magazine and shot lots of weddings, B Day parties, friend's kids / animals and many other joyous occasions. I'm now retired after working for the government for 42 years so spend a lot of time shooting...
