Description
The Kalaupapa Historical National Park is only accessible by plane or on the hiking/mule trail from the topside of Molokai, Hawaii. The trail was hand cut in 1893 by a Portugesse immigrant in order to provide access to the then Leprosy Colony along the Kalaupapa peninsula at the base of Molokai Island. The 3.2 mile (one way) trail starts 1700 ft above Kalaupapa and is maintained by the National Park. It is used daily by tourists and local people that work in Kalaupapa. Rocky and at times wet and muddy it snakes down the cliff front with 26 switch backs that can be challenging. This shot was taken about half way up as I went up and back down in a period of about 3.5 hours. I work part time in Kalaupapa and always fly in. I had a brake on this day so thought I'd take the challenge and a challenge it was. Photograph is the copyright property of Craig Wood and cannot be copied or used without permission.
