Description
This whole area of Makua is a sacred place to all Hawaiians. Makua means "parent" in Hawaiian. The valley of Makua is said to be the place where "man" came from. It is also thought to be the place where the spirits of Hawaiians go to join with their ancestors. This is Kila'ila'i beach that would be a direct route to the sacred valley accept it is blocked by the U.S. Government for use by the U.S, Army training. Long a bitter battle between Hawaiians and the Army over ownership. The beach itself was a resting spot for canoes that where traveling from Oahu's North Shore many hundreds of years ago. Today it is a popular beach for swiming and sometimes surfing. Photograph is the copyright property of Craig Wood and cannot be copied or used without permission.
