Artist's Description

This whole area of Makua is a sacred place to all Hawaiians. Makua means "parent" in Hawaiian. The valley of Makua is said to be the place where "man" came from. It is also thought to be the place where the spirits of Hawaiians go to join with their ancestors. This is Kila'ila'i beach that would be a direct route to the sacred valley accept it is blocked by the U.S. Government for use by the U.S, Army training. Long a bitter battle between Hawaiians and the Army over ownership. The beach itself was a resting spot for canoes that where traveling from Oahu's North Shore many hundreds of years ago. Today it is a popular beach for swiming and sometimes surfing. Photograph is the copyright property of Craig Wood and cannot be copied or used without permission. FAA watermark will not appear on prints purchased.

About Craig Wood

Craig Wood

My first camera was a Kodak Brownie that I purchased with a $5.00 bill that I found at the age of 12 (69 years ago, so no digital then). My first black and white photos were of the Steinhardt Museum in San Francisco and later the Kon Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's sailing raft. Needless to say I was hooked. I joined the Air Force in 1960 and traveled throughout Asia. Even after retiring from the Air Force I was still in and out of Asia and Hawaii. My usual choice of 35 mm cameras was by Canon. I've done some 4 X 5 macro photography for a friend's magazine and shot lots of weddings, B Day parties, friend's kids / animals and many other joyous occasions. I'm now retired after working for the government for 42 years so spend a lot of time shooting...
