Description
This whole area of Makua is a sacred place to all Hawaiians. Makua means "parent" in Hawaiian. The valley of Makua is said to be the place where "man" came from. It is also thought to be the place where the spirits of Hawaiians go to join with their ancestors. At the base of this is a volcanic lava tube called "Makua Cave." It was said to be the home of a sacred Mo'o (lizard) goddess Ko'iahi and where she met up with Kaneana "sharkman".
