Description
Saint Francis of Assisi born 1181 and died 1226 in Assisi, duchy of Spoleto, Italy. He spent his youth in luxury and training in the martial arts of the time. Because of his position in society and his desire to be a knight rather than a merchant, like his father, he indulged himself in wine and partying until he was kidnapped and held for ransom. It took better than a year for his father to come up with the ransom money so Francis was imprisoned all of that time. Once he was returned to Assisi he abandon the life of luxury and took refuge in an abandon church that he sought to restore. Many in the surrounding area considered him "mad." He died at the age of 44 and was made a saint within two years, He has been noted as the saint to animals. Although the "modern" church now calls him the saint of ecologists.
This statue is located outside of the church named for him in Burien, Washington.
