The coat of arms of the Hawaiian Kingdom, bearing the motto, "Ua mau ke ea o ka `aina i ka pono," (*Translated as: "The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness," or "The life of the land is perpetuated in universal balance.") adorns each of the four major gateways into the `Iolani Palace grounds. First appearing during the reign of Queen Lili`uokalani, these bronze plaques were removed by the conspirators who overthrew the Kingdom in 1893 with United State military support. Sold at public auction, the plaques were retrieved after ninety years. Following exhaustive restoration of paintwork, they were reinstalled in 1983.

My first camera was a Kodak Brownie that I purchased with a $5.00 bill that I found at the age of 12 (69 years ago, so no digital then). My first black and white photos were of the Steinhardt Museum in San Francisco and later the Kon Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's sailing raft. Needless to say I was hooked. I joined the Air Force in 1960 and traveled throughout Asia. Even after retiring from the Air Force I was still in and out of Asia and Hawaii. My usual choice of 35 mm cameras was by Canon. I've done some 4 X 5 macro photography for a friend's magazine and shot lots of weddings, B Day parties, friend's kids / animals and many other joyous occasions. I'm now retired after working for the government for 42 years so spend a lot of time shooting...
