Artist's Description

Built back about 1909, it has served to keep ships safe as they passed through the channel between Molokai and Oahu. Actually named the Molokai Light, it sits on the peninsula of Kalaupapa and once made a 180 degree sweep across the leper colony there lighting the 1,800 foot cliffs behind it. A patient-resident there, Richard Marks said, "Everyone of our people...can remember this light looking over us...That light has been very special to the people here. It has been here longer than any living person has. You could always look out and see it sweeping across the cliff. It is the Kalapapa Light." The light is now automated so it only sweeps across a small section on the Molokai Channel. it only Photograph is the copyright property of Craig Wood and cannot be copied or used without permission. About Craig Wood

Craig Wood

My first camera was a Kodak Brownie that I purchased with a $5.00 bill that I found at the age of 12 (69 years ago, so no digital then). My first black and white photos were of the Steinhardt Museum in San Francisco and later the Kon Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's sailing raft. Needless to say I was hooked. I joined the Air Force in 1960 and traveled throughout Asia. Even after retiring from the Air Force I was still in and out of Asia and Hawaii. My usual choice of 35 mm cameras was by Canon. I've done some 4 X 5 macro photography for a friend's magazine and shot lots of weddings, B Day parties, friend's kids / animals and many other joyous occasions. I'm now retired after working for the government for 42 years so spend a lot of time shooting...
