Description
I made the long hike out to Ka'ena Point bird sanctuary this morning and was greeted by this beauty flying in from the ocean. Ka'ena Point is a unique sanctuary that was fenced in to ensure the safety of the birds nesting there. Previously birds were vulnerable to wild cats, rats and mongoose. Probably better known as "Goony Birds" the bulk of the population reside in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. They spend half of their lives at sea and only come to land from October through August to mate and raise the young.
