Description
Puu O Hulu is located in Maili on the Waianae Coast of Oahu. Rather formidable in appearance because the face of it looks a little like King Kong and, in the right light, other outcroppings look monkey like. It is actually a large volcanic hill that is mostly known for being the site of a WWII era military reservation made up of several pill boxes on the top of the ridgeline and Battery Hulu at the base, facing the Pacific Ocean. The structures that are still standing were constructed to ensure that another surprise attack would not be possible by the Japanese. Its become a very popular hiking spot as the view at the top is spectacular. Ive been up there three times now.
The Hawaiian legend says that Puu O Hulu used to be a chief that was in love with Mailiili. Mailiili, however, had a twin sister and the chief could not tell the two apart. A moo (powerful lizard or dragon spirits that are said to inhabit waterfalls, fishponds, and the ocean) is said to have turned them all into mountains, with Puu O Hulu being the chief looking over the two twin sisters, Puu O Mailiili, forever trying to figure out who which of the two is his true love.
