Description
This ancient rock wall was part of a Hawaiian fishing village on the beach at Kalaupapa until the King decided in 1865 that they would have to leave in order to create an isolation location for lepers. The peninsula of Kakanalua or Kalaupapa was selected because of its isolation from the rest of the island of Molokai.
Beyond the rock wall lies the natural harbor at Kalawao where "patients" were often forced off of ships that transported them here for a life sentence. This beautiful spot was the location selected by King Kamehameha V of The Kingdom of Hawaii in 1865 for the establishment of the a Leprosy colony. Hawaiians and others identified with Leprosy were exiled here from 1866 to 1949 when a cure was discovered by Dr Hansen in !940. Today it is a National Park and the home of the remaining patients with "Hansen's disease". All rights apply. FAA watermark will not appear on any photo or product purchased.
