Description
Kalawao on the peninsula of Kalaupapa Molokai. This beautiful spot was the location selected by King Kamehameha V of The Kingdom of Hawaii in 1865 for the establishment of a Leprosy colony. The natural harbor at Kalawao was where ships dropped or even forced off those that were excited here. Hawaiians and others identified with Leprosy were exiled here from 1866 to 1949 when a cure was discovered by Dr Hansen in !940.
The peninsula of Kalaupapa is now a National Park and remains the home of those few patients that remain. It is only accessible by plane or a hike down from "top side" above the flat, isolated peninsula. All rights apply. FAA watermark will not appear on any photo or product purchased.
